Front, Front Mark, Face, Back, Back Case Mark, Cuvette, Cuvette Mark, Movement, Movement Closeup Waltham 1872 Model American Grade. The run of Waltham 1872 American Grade movements at 999,9xx contains examples of the Charles Vander Woerd's Patent sawtooth balance. However, the bulk of these movements have either had the balance changed to a normal expansion balance or a modified balance that has the normal form with a special alloy that appears to be the same as the alloy in the sawtooth balance. This example is 999988 with the alloy form of the balance. The movement number is scratched on the bottom side of the balance arm. The Waltham handwritten ledgers place the production of this run of watches as starting in December of 1879 and running to June of 1882. The open face examples with Woerd's Patent marking are in the run of 1,427,901 - 1,427,920 and were made in August and September of 1881. The runs, although 427,000 numbers apart were made in the same period. There is another American Grade run at 871,101 to 871,161 recorded in the hand written ledgers as 4 1/2 pairs and are therefore most likely 18J watches. Some of these also have the sawtooth balance but are not engraved like the example shown here. An example from this run (871,132) appeared in a Bulletin article in October 1982. This odd length run has an associated 5 pair (19J or 21J) run that continues the series to 871,200. The next run at 999,900 (this one) is 21J.
